Competitions

At GBGC the Handicaps and Competitions Committee endeavour to provide a full and varied programme of handicap qualifying and non-qualifying competitions throughout the year.  For the complete programme of events, please consult the Club Diary

The competition year is divided into summer and winter seasons

Summer

Weekend competitions are played over two days.  Effectively this means that a member can play in the competition on either a Saturday or a Sunday only.  The results of the two days competitions are combined to produce the winners.  This arrangement allows as many members as possible to participate in the competition.  The summer season commences in April through to October.  The monthly medals are divisionalised with a winner in each division.  Divisions are handicap based, division one 0-12, division two 13-20, division three 21-28.

Winter

Saturday and Sunday competitions are played as separate competitions (with the exception of the Armistice Day Trophy in November).  A member may enter both Saturday and Sunday competitions.  Winter medals are non-divisional.

The Handicap qualifying competitions are composed of monthly medals and trophy competitions.  The winners of all trophy competitions and the divisional medal winners qualify to play in the Masters Competition in October.

The monthly medal is competed for on the first full weekend of every month throughout the year.  Should a medal competition be cancelled for any reason, that particular day’s medal will be re-arranged for the corresponding day on the third weekend of the same month.

Trophy competitions are arranged throughout the summer season.

All qualifying competitions are to be played from the competition (white) tees.

Various knockout competitions are played throughout the summer.  Please consult the Club Diary for entrance qualification and closing dates.  Time restrictions apply to these competitions.  It is expected that they are weekday fixtures.  However, they may be played on a weekend but after 1700 hours.

Under no circumstances is it permissible for a member to be playing two club competitions within a single round of golf.

All members entering competitions must ensure that their names are entered into the competition book, which is held in club professional shop, before commencing play.  An entrance fee will be levied for all competitions.  This fee is inclusive of sweep monies.  For distribution of sweep, please consult the Club Diary.  For all qualifying competitions, the club professional runs a two/s competition.

All competitors playing in qualifying competitions must ensure that their scores are entered into the computer, located in the cloakroom, and scorecards are posted into the competition box in the same location.  This applies to all cards whether the round is complete or not.

Gentleman members who play in qualifying competitions at other clubs must return their scorecards or a signed note giving the required information immediately to the club secretary.

Competitors are responsible for seeing that their scorecards are properly marked, signed and countersigned and that the correct handicap is entered before being handed in.

Winter League

From October through to February, the Handicaps and Competitions Committee run a Winter League.

This is a pairs competition played on a Sunday morning.  Each division is played on a league basis with the winner and runner up of each division going forward to play in a knockout competition for the Albert Smith Memorial Cup.

The rules are contained within the Club Diary and are posted on the Handicaps and Competitions notice board.
